Product Description
In the early seventies, the anti-establishment counterculture evolved into a new movement of health and agricultural purists. Rebelling against the politics and pollution of the U.S., these young people sought to create their own natural paradise outside its borders. This is the story of one such expatriated American, a starry-eyed wild child who searches for a fantasy lifestyle and gets more than she bargains for. The storyline, a colorful tapestry of romantic adventure set in the jungles of Belize, Central America, is flavored with vivid imagery, picturesque characters, wild animals, and Mayan archaeological intrigue. But it is also a compelling story of a maturing young woman and her battle with the darker side of human nature, of innocence lost, deception, infidelity, and heartbreaking exile. Full of poignant moral dilemma, it is a story of one woman's survival, of exceptional courage, strength in overcoming adversity, spiritual growth, and eventual triumph.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.....Haunting   June 19, 2007

Rarely does a book grab me from the very beginning, reading it late into the night, distracting me as I went about my daily routine, anxious to get back where I left off the night before. This is one of those unforgettable stories that will haunt you and stay with you long after it is finished. I have to remind myself that I have never been to Belize. The author painted a picture as clear as if I walked the trails, taking in the scents, sights and sounds. Beautiful surroundings mixed with pain, humiliation and suffering....making choices so painful I had to put the book down and weep for her strength and will to survive. I will never forget this story.

5 out of 5 stars An adventurous journey of real-world survival   June 19, 2007

Belize Survivor is a page-turner. Be prepared to put other things aside until you've finished reading. It is a story of a young woman, part flower child who follows her adventurous heart, traveling across North America and down through Mexico to settle in Belize in Central America. Alexis is courageous, strong, and intelligent, and yet finds herself embroiled in a toxic, controlling relationship with the father of her children. Her struggles to break away and to obtain custody of her children are heart-breaking. The courage she displays is inspirational. Any woman living in an abusive relationship should read this book. The backdrop for this amazing story is the beautiful "jewel of the Caribbean," Belize, and the author's description of life in the jungles and on the beaches is so convincing, one can almost feel the breezes, smell the orchids, and hear the sounds of tropical birds singing. This is the book for you if you ever thought about leaving civilization and starting all over again, from scratch, living off the land in an exotic foreign land. It will make you smile, it will make you cry, and you will marvel at the strength and determination of the heroine.

5 out of 5 stars Richly colored and multi-dimensional   June 22, 2007

No slow spots in this story. The author has created a great sense of anticipation on nearly every page - what is going to happen next? She is also very talented in painting pictures with words; the characters are developed or portrayed very well. Much is said without a lot of embellishment; and the reader easily constructs the mental images that give the story texture.

This book was an inspiration for me to travel to see the coral reefs of the Caribbean, and the tropical forests of Central America. I just returned from a trip to a Caribbean island to explore coral reefs. While there, I met an old man who practices bush medicine. I plan to return as soon as possible to record the plants he uses and the practices of his herbal tradition before this knowledge is lost. If I hadn't read this book I never would have found this new mission and this new adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Survivor - Unbelievable!   September 22, 2007

I just finished this book 5 minutes ago and raced to the computer to add my rave reviews to the growing collection. I do believe life is full of surprising connections and moments of serendipity that amaze even the most jaded of us. This book entertained, depressed, enraged, and inspired me. I will be moving to Belize this year with family, and although leaving my 15 yo son behind with his dad is a difficult choice I have not verbalized this til I read the end of this story. Although never physically abused, I encountered many years of dealing with the psychological and emotional manipulations of my son's father. Choosing to leave a child can never be explained by words to anyone that has not experienced the pain of chewing their own limb off. I can not wait for the book sequel and the movie. Best of luck to the author and thank you for surviving and having the courage to share your powerful story with others! The Golden Rules do apply and it is always wonderful to see another great example of life's energies "always coming back home to you".

Wow! Nancy Koerner paints textures of the counter culture, how it felt, and through the lens of vivid imagery that she has penned I am able to feel that I am there and experiencing it all over again. A remarkable story and one that is easy to connect to. Allan Stamm, FL
