Secrets & Mysteries of Hawaii--the only book I won't loan November 28, 2004 Kala (Alexandria, VA) 24 out of 26 found this review helpful
I "stumbled" onto Secrets & Mysteries of Hawaii on my first trip to the Big island. I couldn't put the book down...read it in 2 days. I found it confirming of my own experiences on other islands and other trips to Hawaii; I found it breathtaking in its descriptions of the energies of the islands and the interconnectedness with the rest of the earth. I have told many people about it. I have given copies to people...but my copy never is far from my side. If you haven't been to Hawaii and want to know why it "pulls" so many, this is the book for you. If you are planning a trip to Hawaii, this is a "must read." If you have been to Hawaii, and know it is "home," this is also a "must read."
This Book is a Gem May 13, 2002 Regina Chiles (Vienna, Austria) 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
So many wonderful reviews about this remarkable book in regards to its magic, depth and humor have already been written. I can agree with every single word, any reviewer has stated, completely. Thus I would like to point out another special passage of Pila's guidebook which turned out to be a very touching message for my personal life. The "Call to the Soul" stepped into my world coincidentally before I went to Kaua'i, Hawaii, in order to meet Goddess Pele. Amongst so many lines full of marvellous depth there were also these two sentences, since then decorating the wall of my apartment, saying: "And all along the way of life there were only the three things that counted. Something to do, something to look forward to, and the third one, that blessing, if it ever happens... someone to share it with." Each soul has its own yearning, every person is seeking individual truth. Many magic things happened since I read this book. And they led me eventually to Pila's personal "Akashic Life Path Readings" which definitely changed my life! I will reread this book and return to Hawaii soon...
Best book on the "real" Hawaii I've ever read! May 25, 2000 14 out of 17 found this review helpful
This is a book to savor and let the information and feeling of real aloha sink in. After living in Hawaii for seven years this is the first book I've come across that catches the the magical, mystical essence of Hawaii accurately, and in true island style - with a balance of respect and humor. Pila has his information down through study, homage to his teachers and direct experience. This is a book about much more than Hawaii for those that have eyes to see and perception to perceive beyond the words. Pila brings the hidden stories of creation - ancient Hawaiian style - out for us to experience. Much of what he's talking about goes far beyond any particular race or place. I have given this book as a gift and encouraged others to buy it, (I manage a bookstore). I've received wonderful feedback on same. It's deep, fun and interesting to read, the type of book one doesn't want to end. This book is a blessing that can and should be read and experienced on many levels. Aloha and blessings to you, Pila, for your gifts of Aloha and more.
One of the best books I've ever read September 1, 2003 Kali (Oxnard, Ca USA) 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
Pila's book is a real calling to the soul. I have owned this book for seven years and still refer to it often. Pila has a way of getting to your heart and reminding you of things and a culture long forgotten. I finished this book in one reading. It really helped me thru my healing process. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Hawaiian culture & history or anyone going thru their healing process. Although I have never been to Hawaii Pila has a way of making you think you have been there many times before. He also has a lot of insight into the human psyche. It's jsut such a great book I can't say enough about it.
An unusual guidebook August 4, 2000 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
I was browsing in the Hawaii/travel section of a bookstore in preparation for a trip to Hawaii not long ago and "Secrets & Mysteries of Hawaii" leaped off the shelf into my hands. Once I started to read it I found I couldn't put it down. The book is a "guide" book to the many worlds--both inner and outer--of Big Island, whereby Chiles explores his vision of Hawaii as spiritual metaphor for our contemporary times. Hawaiian culture, language, myth, gods, people and sacred places are brought to life by Chiles' vivid narrative and autobiographical perspective. It reads like an adventure story, is a veritable Hawaiian "bouillabaise", often wild and woolly stuff --complete with material on UFO's and angels. I had the feeling I was being given `the inside story'-- told with humor, knowledge and self revelation as Chiles shares the continuing odyssey of his love and experience of Hawaii with the reader. At times I found myself very moved by passages in this unusual book, written with what I do belive is true 'aloha spirit'. Aspects of Hawaiian history are underscored by Chiles' passion for and commitment to the recent renaissance of Hawaiian culture and the growing Sovereignty movement. This is a wonderful book whether one is traveling to Hawaii or not, for as revealed by Pila Chiles, Hawaii can become an inner image for a way of being, available to any who would, with perseverance and sincerity, search for it.
