Product Description
Six island children are running at daybreak -- over the hills, through the fields, across the city square -- to school! Never before has the love of learning (and learning together) been such a joyous time. Denise Lauture's buoyant, poetic text captures the happiness and youth of energetic children on the way to school; Reynold Ruffins perfectly illustrates the rich beauty of Haiti with the bright-colored vibrance of Haitian folk art. A great read-aloud book for the classroom.

Stunning May 5, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The illustrations are absolutely stunning; the text is delightful and touching. Haitian children travel long distances in the wee hours of the morning without shoes to simply get to school. What a wake-up call for those of us in the U.S. struggling to get our children dressed and off to school. I bought it for my three-year-old daughter who is half Haitian, but it is a beautiful tale for any child (or adult).
poetry and pictures! September 24, 2005 P Alix (Massachusetts USA) Beautiful poetry, with rich Haitian style artwork. Young readers will love to be read this book, and we can all learn about what a privelege it is to attend school and how hard it is for some children. The story captures the rhythm and excitement of the children running to school early in the morning in Haiti. Beautiful, readable, enriching.
