Product Description This new edition of Enid Donaldson s popular cookbook, completely re-designed with additional photographs and a brand new cover, takes food lovers and cooks into Jamaican kitchens and restaurants to sample the full range of native cuisine prepared by local housewives, restaurateurs and roadside "jerkies". Enid Donaldson presents her dishes with flair and imagination, delicately spiced and flavoured with curry, scotch bonnet peppers, jerk sauce, pimento, nutmeg, rum and a dash of Jamaican humour. Traditional recipes are included for those who would like to recapture childhood memories. A new section, "Ole Time Something," contributed by noted journalist and talk-show host Barbara Gloudon, captures the memories and magic of Jamaican kitchens and homes of yesteryear. In this new edition, Ms. Donaldson captures the flavour of Jamaica with a sumptuous collection of over 200 traditional and popular recipes. The Real Taste of Jamaica is one of the best offerings of Jamaican cuisine both in its comprehensive nature and its authentic cultural quality. This is more than just a cookbook; it is celebration of Jamaican culture and a home entertainer s delight.

The SWEET LET DOWN January 30, 2006 Mekisha Hugh Hampton (Jamaica, The Bronx and now in Alabama) 22 out of 32 found this review helpful
Okay, let me give you the run down before you purchase this book like I did. My parents are Jamaican and I am a first generation born in the U.S. (Bronx, New York), I brought this book hoping to find the dishes that I grew up eating as a child so that I can make them for my husband and myself. I have an idea of how to make certain dishes because I have seen my mother, grandmother and aunt do them hundreds of times, but I never prepared them on my own. I brought this book so I wouldn't have to keep calling my grand mother (Mavis...Yeah I told you we were Jamaican lol), any way this book had recipes I never heard of in my life! It doesn't even have a recipe for Ox Tails! How are you going to have a Jamaican cook book and not have Ox Tails in there? That's like a Jamaican meal staple you know. Every Jamaican knows that the top Jamaican dishes are CURRY CHICKEN, CURRY GOAT, OX TAIL, ACKEE AND SALT FISH, ESCOVIETCH FISH AND THE JERK CHICKEN, PORK and so on. So if you are not Jamaican or West Indian this book might be good for you, but if you are straight up from Yard or a born Jamerican like myself no bada waste yu money pon dis ya book! Mi still mad about it! Cha!

I first saw this book at a friend's house. And asked to borrow it. I read this book from cover to cover within a day. One of the beauties about this book is that you can read it without being a cook. There is much to be learned about Jamaican culture and food preparation. This book talks about the development of Jamaican food history. You will learn how the contributions of East Indians, Arawaks, Chinese, Africans and others have made Jamaican dishes so very appealing.
The Best Jamaican Cookbook Around February 9, 2003 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
This is the best cookbook for Jamaican cuisine that I've ever seen! The author is a well-known cook in Jamaica; therefore, she's an excellent source of information. The cookbook has many wonderful photos of the finished product (a feature that is not commonly found in cookbooks that are geared towards Jamaican cooking), and the recipes are very easy to follow. I am born of Jamaican parents, and I really wanted to find a good book that could help me cook authentic Jamaican dishes in an authentic way. I've had this book for seven years and I successfully made every dish that I've tried. The book covers all types of food (appetizers, entrees, desserts, drinks), and it has a glossary to help you learn about certain foods that are not commonly found outside of Jamaica. If you are serious about learning how to cook Jamaican food, this is the book to have. If you are unable to get this book in your home country, I would suggest contacting the Jamaica Tourist Board and finding out the names of some bookstores in Kingston, Montego Bay or Ocho Rios. Contact those stores directly. If someone is going over to Jamaica, have them get this book for you (it's a great gift). I just bought a copy for someone while I was in a bookstore Ocho Rios. It was being sold in hardback for $29.95 ($60.00 less than what it was being sold for on-line). I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make authentic Jamaican food.
