Jamaica Inn...a Motel 6 of intrigue October 29, 2008 NyiNya Boy did I want to love this book. And on the surface, it's got everything. You take a book with a beautiful, independent young woman, a handsome rogue, an evil step uncle, a gang of cut-throats, a mysterious house at the edge of the moor, crashing waves, stormy nights, and people who are not always what they seem, and you should have one roller coaster of a read. And considering that this was written by Daphne DuMaurier, who chilled us with The Birds (and if you haven't read the short story, do so...it's not at all like the book)and hypnotized us with Rebecca, one expects a great deal. Jamaica Inn just never grabbed me. The story unfolds so slowly, it's painful. When Our Heroine walks the moor, it feels like she's doing it in real time. I also had a hard time not wanting to shake a little sense into this supposedly very sensible young woman. Upon her mother's death, she goes to live with her sprightly, coquettish Aunt, who has recently married. Upon arrival, Our Heroine finds that Auntie's husband is a vicous brute and has turned the poor woman into a stammering, shaking, terrified wreck. So who does Our Heroine decide to fall in love with? The roguish, undisciplined look alike kid brother of Evil Uncle, who has "Future Domestic Abuser" written all over him. Sorry, Ms. DuMaurier. after checking out Jamaica Inn, I wouldn't check in.
