Product Description This is Gennady Spirin's own dear story about the day his son Ilya found a crow with a broken wing, and brought it home. The veterinarian told the boy that it would never fly again. "Put it to sleep!" he urged the parents. But the wild crow-Martha, they called her-was full of surprises. She most certainly made their home, her home, and one day she did fly! Would there be one more surprise? When she flew away that fall, would she return again? With Gennady Spirin's beautiful and delicate watercolor illustrations and the sweet memory of Martha's year as his guide, Martha takes flight once again.

A beautiful story of compassion and care November 10, 2005 DONALD G. FOX (Minneapolis, MN USA) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is the story of a family who cares for a bird that has been hurt. The family worries about the bird's health and happiness. Choices are made and compassion wins the day. It's a very gentle story for children and touches on themes of responsibility and freedom. Truly a sweet story.
A great children's book October 12, 2007 Prometheus 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
As an artist with a young daughter I'm always on the lookout for really good stories that are well-illustrated. When I found Gennady Spirin's 'Martha', it reminded me of a number of my own experiences trying to rescue injured birds. The illustrations are very good indeed - as well as being very artistic they have an old world quality about them. Many times I pick up children's illustrated books and the art leaves me cold - it's either simplistic or not very competent. Mr. Spirin's art feels somehow 'warm' and fulfilling - perfect for a warmhearted tale like this. I wish more children's books were illustrated with as much love and care as this one. The story is simple yet moving and well suited to kids of any age. Parents will enjoy reading this to children of three years and older. The story takes a short time to read - perhaps five or ten minutes - perfect for bedtime reading. I recommend this book highly and I look forward to more of Mr. Spirin's work. I'm especially looking forward to his version of 'The Tale of The Firebird' as that has been a favourite story of mine for a good many years.
not in new condition as stated June 13, 2008 S. Ellsworth 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
We ordered two copies, as gifts. They were supposed to be in new condition, and they didn't look used, but they were dirty, scratched, and had marks from a black marker on one outside edge of the pages. We had to throw the covers away and were embarrassed to be giving them as gifts.
